About this course

Mathematical sciences is perhaps the most versatile of all degree programmes, combining pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics and operational research into a single broad but rigorous course of study. Mathematics is the language of precision, and mathematicians are in demand wherever careful analytical thinking and the ability to model complex systems are required. The discipline trains you to construct and evaluate arguments with rigour, to see structure in apparent complexity, and to solve problems that do not have obvious answers.

At the University of Southampton this programme is designed to be flexible, giving you a thorough grounding in the core areas of the discipline while allowing you to add options from economics, the sciences or languages, shaping your degree around your interests and intended direction. You will cover pure mathematics, including algebra, analysis and topology, alongside applied areas such as differential equations and numerical methods, and statistical theory and operational research. The programme runs over three years full time and develops the kind of analytical capability and problem-solving instinct that translates readily into a very wide range of professional contexts.
