About this course

Mathematics and accounting is a combination that prepares you for one of the most technically demanding and financially rewarding intersections in professional life. Mathematics provides the rigorous analytical foundation, the capacity for abstract reasoning, and the quantitative tools that underpin modern accounting, auditing, and financial analysis. Accounting provides the practical and conceptual frameworks through which the financial position and performance of organisations are recorded, reported, and interpreted.

At Newcastle University, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year in professional practice and a year abroad, giving you both substantial work experience and international academic exposure. You will develop fluency in mathematical analysis, statistics, and numerical methods alongside a thorough grounding in financial reporting, management accounting, taxation, auditing, and corporate finance. The sandwich year connects your academic learning to the professional world of accounting firms, financial institutions, or corporate finance teams, and graduates who have completed it consistently demonstrate greater commercial awareness.

Graduates of mathematics and accounting programmes are strongly placed for careers in chartered accountancy, management consultancy, investment banking, actuarial work, financial analysis, and audit. The professional accountancy bodies recognise degree-level study in relevant subjects as contributing to examination exemptions, and many graduates pursue chartered status with bodies such as the ICAEW, ACCA, or CIMA. The quantitative rigour of the mathematics element is particularly valued in roles that involve complex financial modelling, risk analysis, or data-driven decision-making.
