About this course

Mathematics and computer science are natural partners. Mathematics provides the formal reasoning and problem-solving frameworks that underpin modern computing, while computer science applies those tools to build software, systems, and algorithms that have transformed every corner of contemporary life. Studying them together gives you the best of both worlds: the intellectual depth of pure and applied mathematics alongside the practical rigour of programming and computational thinking.

This four-year programme begins with a Science Foundation Year designed to build the knowledge and study skills you need before moving into the main degree content. Once in the core years, you will explore topics spanning calculus, linear algebra, probability, statistics, data structures, algorithms, software engineering, and machine learning. You will develop fluency in mathematical proof and in translating abstract ideas into working code.

Because the course includes a placement year, you will spend time in industry gaining hands-on experience in a real professional environment, which typically strengthens both your technical skills and your understanding of how computational and mathematical methods are applied in practice.

Graduates of combined mathematics and computer science programmes are highly sought after in fields where rigorous quantitative thinking and software capability both matter.
