About this course

Mathematics and management is a degree that combines the precision and rigour of mathematical thinking with the analytical and strategic frameworks of management education. Mathematics develops your capacity to reason clearly and quantitatively, to model complex systems, and to use the tools of calculus, linear algebra, probability, and statistics to analyse and solve problems. Management develops your understanding of how organisations work, how strategy is formed, and how decisions are made in commercial and institutional contexts.

Together, they produce graduates who can bring quantitative precision to business analysis, which is a capability that organisations across all sectors consistently seek.

The three-year full-time Mathematics and Management programme at the University of York develops your mathematical, statistical, financial, and operations skills to a level that provides an excellent platform for applying your knowledge as a quantitative business analyst. You will learn to use sophisticated tools from a broad range of mathematical disciplines to sharpen your mathematical and statistical reasoning, and to apply that reasoning to real management and business problems. The programme is taught by expert academics who are active researchers in their fields, and it includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement options that provide substantial professional and international experience before you graduate.

With a typical entry tariff of 136 points, the programme is rigorous and requires genuine mathematical ability. Graduates are well placed for careers in quantitative analysis, finance, data science, operations research, management consulting, and technology roles where the combination of mathematical and business skills is in high demand. Many also pursue postgraduate study in mathematics, data science, finance, or management.

A great decision
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” good transport li…

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good tran…
