Mathematics and Music

Mathematics and music is a combination that has been recognised since antiquity as deeply coherent rather than incongruous. The ancient Greeks classified music as a branch of mathematics, and the connections have never fully disappeared: from the mathematical structures of counterpoint and harmony to the acoustics of sound, the mathematics of tuning systems, and the algorithmic dimensions of contemporary composition, mathematical thinking pervades musical understanding.
