Mathematics and Philosophy

Mathematics and philosophy is one of the most intellectually demanding and rewarding degree combinations available. Mathematics is the discipline of rigorous proof, abstract structure, and quantitative reasoning, developing the capacity to think precisely about problems that are genuinely difficult. Philosophy addresses the foundations of knowledge, the nature of reality, the basis of ethical judgement, and the limits of what can be known or proven.

From the Pythagorean theorem to Russell's paradox, from Euclid's axioms to Wittgenstein's limits of language, the two disciplines have been intertwined throughout their histories, each enriching the other in ways that neither could achieve alone.

At the University of York, this three-year full-time degree applies the shared tradition of logic and analytical reasoning to solve quantifiable problems, to question traditional assumptions, and to develop clear and articulate understanding of complex issues. You will study mathematics across pure and applied areas, developing rigour in proof, problem-solving, and quantitative analysis, while engaging with philosophy across epistemology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, and the philosophy of mathematics itself. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad option, and work placements, giving you professional and international experience alongside the academic depth the subject demands.
