About this course

Mathematics and physics are deeply intertwined disciplines that have developed in close dialogue for centuries. Physics uses the language of mathematics to describe the laws of nature, while many branches of mathematics were initially developed to solve physical problems and subsequently took on lives of their own as pure intellectual pursuits. Studying the two together means you never have to treat mathematics as a mere tool: you understand why the methods work, and you can appreciate physics at the level of rigour that a purely descriptive course cannot provide.

At Loughborough, the programme is designed for those who want to combine the logic and proof of mathematics with the profound insights into the physical world that physics offers. You will study both disciplines in depth, covering areas including calculus, algebra, and analysis on the mathematical side, and mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and thermodynamics on the physics side. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution and to broaden your academic and personal experience.

It runs over four years full-time, with a typical entry tariff of 136 points.

Graduates of mathematics and physics programmes are extraordinarily versatile. The combination of mathematical rigour and physical intuition is valued in research, engineering, computing, finance, and data science, as well as in the energy, defence, and technology sectors. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study, either in physics, mathematics, or at the interface, in areas such as theoretical physics, computational science, or applied mathematics.

Others move directly into careers in quantitative finance, software engineering, scientific computing, or the teaching profession, where deep subject knowledge commands genuine respect.
