About this course

Mathematics and physics are among the most natural of pairings in higher education, because the two disciplines have been in deep productive conversation throughout the history of science. The language of mathematics was developed in large part to describe physical phenomena, and some of the most significant advances in each discipline have come from ideas crossing from one to the other. Differential geometry, originally a branch of pure mathematics, became indispensable for general relativity.

Quantum mechanics demanded new mathematical frameworks. Chaos theory, developed in applied mathematics, transformed how we model the atmosphere, climate, and other complex systems. Studying both disciplines allows you to appreciate and contribute to this ongoing dialogue.

At the University of Warwick, one of the UK's strongest universities for both mathematics and physics, this four-year full-time programme gives you deep grounding in both fields, taught by research-active academics who are advancing the frontiers of their subjects. You will study core mathematical topics including analysis, algebra, differential equations, and probability, alongside core physics covering classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and modern physics. The interplay between the two disciplines is built into the curriculum, so you encounter mathematics as a living tool for physical understanding and physics as a domain that generates rich and difficult mathematical problems.
