About this course

Mathematics and physics is one of the most natural and productive partnerships in the intellectual life of the sciences. Physics provides the empirical and conceptual content, asking what the universe is made of and how its components behave. Mathematics provides the language in which those questions are answered, the formal tools of differential equations, linear algebra, complex analysis, and probability that allow physicists to describe, predict, and understand physical phenomena with precision.

Studying both together means you understand not just the physics but the mathematical structures that make it possible, and not just the mathematics but the physical realities it describes.

At the University of Strathclyde, you will study mathematics and physics over four years full-time, developing deep competence in both disciplines. The physics strand covers mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, optics, and more advanced topics in the later years. The mathematics strand builds your skills in analysis, algebra, probability, and the applied mathematics that is most directly relevant to physical science.

The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution in a different country and encounter different mathematical and physical traditions. The typical entry tariff is 216 UCAS points.

Graduates of mathematics and physics programmes are in strong demand across the sciences, technology, and finance. Careers in academic and industrial research, data science, financial modelling, technology development, telecommunications, and engineering are all accessible. The combination of mathematical rigour and physical intuition is particularly valued in quantitative roles in finance, in research laboratories, and in technology companies developing complex systems.

Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in mathematics, theoretical or applied physics, or related fields.
