About this course

Mathematics and Physics together constitute a powerful intellectual partnership. Physics is the empirical science of the natural world, seeking to discover and describe the laws that govern matter and energy. Mathematics is the language in which those laws are expressed and the toolkit with which they are analysed, derived, and extended.

Studying them together means you can move fluently between the abstract and the concrete, building physical intuition alongside mathematical rigour and understanding how each discipline enriches the other.

At the University of Surrey, this four-year full-time programme includes an integrated foundation year, making it accessible to students who have the aptitude and commitment for the combination but may not have the specific prior qualifications that direct entry requires. The programme covers the core content of both disciplines: in mathematics you will study analysis, linear algebra, differential equations, and more advanced topics in pure and applied mathematics; in physics you will study classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and modern physics. The joint programme is explicitly designed to give you the best of both worlds, as Surrey's own description puts it, whether you approach it from the applied mathematics or the theoretical physics direction.

You will develop the ability to model complex physical systems mathematically, to derive results from first principles, and to think both abstractly and quantitatively about the natural world. These skills are exceptionally transferable.

Graduates pursue careers in research and development in physics, mathematics, engineering, and materials science, as well as in finance and quantitative analysis, computing, data science, defence, and technology. Teaching is a consistent demand area for graduates of both subjects. Many go on to postgraduate study in mathematics, physics, theoretical physics, or applied mathematics.

The problem-solving and quantitative reasoning skills developed on this degree are among the most valued in the graduate labour market.
