Mathematics and Scottish History

Mathematics and Scottish history is a pairing that might seem surprising but reflects the genuine intellectual independence of both disciplines and the breadth of a Scottish MA degree. Mathematics develops the ability to understand complex patterns and structures, to build rigorous proofs, and to apply analytical tools to problems across science, technology, economics, and abstract inquiry. At St Andrews this four-year full-time programme gives you the breadth that a Scottish MA offers, developing serious competence in both mathematics and Scottish history across the degree. In mathematics you will study analysis, algebra, calculus, and statistics, building the rigorous quantitative foundations that underpin both pure mathematical work and its applications. In Scottish history you will engage with primary sources and historical argument, developing the research, analytical, and writing skills that historical scholarship demands.

A year abroad is incorporated into the programme, giving you the chance to study in a different country and to encounter both mathematics and history in a new intellectual and cultural context.

The combination opens diverse graduate paths. Mathematics gives you analytical and quantitative skills that are in demand across finance, technology, data science, actuarial work, and many other sectors.
