About this course

Mathematics and sports science is an unusual but genuinely productive combination, bringing together the formal rigour of mathematical thinking with the scientific study of human physical performance, health, and sport. Mathematics provides the analytical and quantitative tools that underpin so much of sports science, from statistical analysis of performance data to the biomechanical modelling of movement and the probabilistic reasoning used in risk and injury assessment. Sports science, meanwhile, examines the physiological, psychological, and biomechanical dimensions of how human bodies perform and adapt, asking how training, nutrition, psychology, and environment shape athletic outcomes.

At Swansea University, this three-year BSc combines classical and contemporary theory across both disciplines in a programme designed to be fresh and relevant to the wider industry. You will develop mathematical skills in areas such as statistics, data analysis, and modelling alongside core sports science content covering exercise physiology, sport psychology, biomechanics, and the principles of training and conditioning. The combination is particularly well suited to students interested in the quantitative and analytical dimensions of sports performance, coaching, and health.

The programme is taught full-time over three years, balancing academic rigour with the practical elements that give sports science its applied character. Swansea's location on the south Wales coast and its research connections to Welsh and national sporting organisations provide a stimulating context for studying the science of sport.

Graduates from mathematics and sports science degrees move into roles in sports performance analysis, strength and conditioning, sports data science, sports management, health and fitness, physiotherapy support, coaching, and education. The mathematical skills developed are also valued in research, data roles across the sport and health sector, and in adjacent industries where quantitative analysis is central. Postgraduate study in sports science, exercise physiology, data science, or related fields is a natural route for those who wish to develop further.
