Here's the honest picture on this course - what you'd study, whether you'd likely get in, what it pays, and where it leads. Everything's real data.
About this course

Mathematics and statistics together form one of the most powerful intellectual partnerships in modern science, combining the abstract reasoning of pure mathematics with the tools needed to collect, model and interpret data from the real world. Mathematics develops precision of thought, the ability to construct rigorous proofs, and a command of structures that underlie physics, computing and economics alike. Statistics extends that rigour into the empirical domain: it provides the methods by which patterns in data are separated from noise, predictions are made with measured confidence, and complex systems are understood through observation rather than deduction alone.

At the University of York you will study across both disciplines over three years, developing fluency in areas such as analysis, algebra, probability and statistical inference while also working with modern computational tools. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, giving you the opportunity to spend a substantial period in a professional environment applying your mathematical and statistical skills to real problems. A year abroad broadens the experience further, and the programme also includes a work placement component, meaning you graduate with academic depth and genuine professional exposure.

The combination is exceptionally versatile. Quantitative skills of this kind are in high demand across finance, insurance and risk management, data science and technology, pharmaceutical research and clinical trials, government statistical agencies, environmental modelling, and management consultancy. Graduates are valued not just for their ability to handle data but for their capacity to think carefully about what the data means and communicate that clearly to non-specialists.

Many go on to postgraduate study in statistics, data science, operational research, mathematics or closely related fields. For those drawn to understanding the world through numbers, this degree provides both depth and breadth.
