About this course

Mathematics is one of the most ancient and enduring of human intellectual pursuits, and one of the most important foundations of the modern world. It is the language in which the physical sciences are written, the analytical engine behind statistics and data science, the basis of cryptography and computing, and the tool through which engineers, economists and financial professionals model and understand complex systems. Studying mathematics at university develops your capacity for rigorous logical reasoning, precise problem-solving and the kind of abstract thinking that connects apparently different phenomena through elegant general principles.

At Brunel University London, this three-year full-time BSc includes a foundation year, which gives students who need additional preparation the opportunity to build the mathematical knowledge and academic skills needed before progressing into the full degree. You will advance your problem-solving skills, develop your reasoning and deepen your analytical thinking across the core areas of pure and applied mathematics, developing the intellectual formation that makes mathematics graduates competitive across such an unusually wide range of careers. Mathematical models underpin engineering, the applied sciences, computing and many aspects of management and finance, and the breadth of that relevance is a direct consequence of the rigour the discipline demands.

Mathematics graduates are among the most sought-after in the graduate job market, precisely because the discipline develops intellectual skills that transfer readily across domains. Finance, insurance, technology, data science, operational research, engineering, teaching, the civil service and academic research all recruit mathematics graduates in significant numbers. Many graduates pursue professional qualifications in accountancy, actuarial science or data science alongside their careers, while others go on to postgraduate study in mathematics, statistics, financial mathematics, theoretical physics or computer science.

Exceeded expectations
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good transport links ma…

A great decision
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” local cost of living is managea…
