About this course

Mathematics is one of the oldest and most intellectually profound human activities, a discipline that seeks to understand patterns, structures and relationships using rigorous reasoning rather than observation alone. It underpins virtually every quantitative science and much of modern technology, from the algorithms that govern digital communication to the models that describe physical systems, financial markets and biological processes. A mathematics degree develops not just technical skill but a particular way of thinking: precise, systematic and capable of handling abstraction.

At the University of Kent this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year, which provides a thorough grounding in the mathematical ideas and methods you will need before progressing to degree-level study. This route is designed for students who have a strong aptitude for mathematics but whose prior qualifications may not fully meet the standard entry requirements. The foundation year builds confidence and depth in areas such as algebra, calculus and mathematical reasoning, ensuring you are well prepared for the rigour of the main degree.

Over the full four years you will cover the core branches of mathematics, developing skills in analysis, algebra, statistics, applied mathematics and computation.
