About this course

Mathematics is one of humanity's oldest and most powerful intellectual achievements, a discipline concerned with abstract structure, pattern, proof, and the quantitative description of the natural and social world. Its reach is extraordinary: it underpins physics, engineering, economics, computer science, and biology, while also constituting a field of profound beauty and rigour in its own right. The ability to think mathematically, to construct and evaluate proofs, to model complex systems, and to reason precisely about uncertainty is among the most transferable and valued of graduate skills.

At Sheffield Hallam University, this three-year full-time degree includes a foundation year, providing a structured entry point for students who have strong mathematical potential but may not have the most conventional A-level preparation. A sandwich year with work placement is also built into the programme, giving you a substantial period of professional experience before graduation. Sheffield Hallam's programme places particular emphasis on the application of mathematics to real-world challenges, including the use of mathematical modelling to address sustainability problems.

You will develop skills in pure mathematics alongside applied areas such as statistics, data analysis, differential equations, optimisation, and modelling, and you will encounter applications ranging from the dynamics of infectious disease and the management of renewable resources to energy efficiency and sustainable transport. This applied orientation connects abstract mathematical thinking to pressing global questions without sacrificing the rigour that makes mathematical training distinctive.

Mathematics graduates are consistently among the most employable of all university graduates. The combination of logical rigour, quantitative skill, and problem-solving ability that a mathematics degree develops opens doors across finance, actuarial science, data science, consultancy, technology, engineering, government analysis, and research. The placement year gives graduates a significant advantage in recruitment, with many finding that their year in industry becomes the foundation for their first permanent role.

Postgraduate study in mathematics, statistics, data science, financial mathematics, or a range of applied fields is a natural progression for those who wish to deepen their expertise.
