About this course

Mathematics at the University of Glasgow is a four-year programme that takes you from a rigorous foundation in the major branches of the subject through to advanced study in the areas that most interest you. The discipline is simultaneously one of humanity's oldest intellectual achievements and one of its most contemporary tools, providing the language of the natural sciences, the foundations of computing and cryptography, and the analytical framework for finance, data science and a vast range of other applications. At its core, mathematics is the practice of establishing truth through proof, and the habits of mind it develops are unlike those cultivated by any other discipline.

You will study analysis, algebra, probability, statistics, applied mathematics and numerical methods, developing both the abstract reasoning and the computational skills that modern mathematical practice demands. The honours years offer a wide variety of course choices, allowing you to specialise in areas of pure or applied mathematics that reflect your own intellectual interests. An ambassador scheme gives students the chance to spend time in schools, developing teaching experience and professional skills alongside their academic work.

A year abroad is built into the four-year programme, providing the opportunity to engage with mathematical culture and education in a different national context.

Mathematics graduates from Glasgow and other leading institutions enter a remarkably wide range of careers. The analytical rigour and problem-solving capability the degree develops are valued across finance, data science, software engineering, actuarial work, cryptography and cybersecurity, operations research, the civil service and management consultancy. Teaching in secondary schools is a common path, particularly for those who have participated in the ambassador scheme.
