About this course

Mathematics is the fundamental language of pattern, structure, and logical reasoning, and its reach extends into virtually every area of human activity, from the models that describe physical systems to the algorithms underpinning computing, the statistical tools that inform policy, and the financial models that govern investment. Studying mathematics at degree level develops not just technical competence but a particular quality of mind: the ability to construct precise arguments, to identify structure in complex situations, and to move confidently between abstract thinking and concrete application.

At Swansea University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who do not yet have the qualifications to enter the main degree directly. The foundation year gives you the essential mathematical grounding and develops the analytical habits that the subsequent three years build on. Across the full programme you will study pure mathematics including analysis, algebra, and topology, applied mathematics covering mechanics, differential equations, and numerical methods, and statistics and probability, developing a broad command of the discipline.

Swansea's mathematics department has a strong research culture, and undergraduate students benefit from exposure to active research areas within their teaching.

Mathematics graduates are among the most versatile and sought-after graduates in the economy. Common careers include roles in financial services, data science, actuarial work, software development, engineering consultancy, operational research, teaching, and the civil service. The analytical rigour that a mathematics degree develops is valued wherever complex problems need to be solved and communicated clearly.

Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in mathematics, statistics, data science, financial mathematics, and related disciplines, and a significant number go on to doctoral research.

Genuinely worthwhile
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” local cost…

Solid, with caveats
It's been a mixed experience, but mostly positive. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” the city is a bril…
