About this course

Mathematics is one of the oldest and most rigorous intellectual disciplines, concerned with the structures, patterns, and relationships that underlie both the abstract world of pure reasoning and the concrete world of scientific application. It develops a way of thinking that is precise, systematic, and creative: the ability to define problems exactly, to construct proofs and arguments from first principles, and to apply quantitative reasoning to questions in science, technology, finance, and beyond. In an era of big data, machine learning, and increasingly complex systems, mathematical literacy is more valuable than at any previous point in history.

At the University of East Anglia, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, which is a relatively unusual feature for a mathematics degree and one that adds significant value. Spending time studying mathematics in a different national and academic tradition broadens your mathematical perspective and develops the independence, adaptability, and cultural awareness that employers in quantitative fields increasingly value. The programme covers pure and applied mathematics across a range of core areas, including analysis, algebra, calculus, probability, statistics, numerical methods, and mathematical modelling.

You will develop rigorous proof-writing skills and the ability to apply mathematical techniques to real-world problems, and you will engage with more advanced and specialist topics as the degree progresses.

UEA has a strong mathematics department and the year abroad is supported with guidance on finding suitable partner institutions that can extend your mathematical education in directions that complement your interests.

Graduates pursue careers in finance, data science, actuarial work, software engineering, scientific research, cryptography, teaching, and government. Many go on to postgraduate study in mathematics, statistics, or applied fields. The year abroad adds a dimension of international experience that makes UEA mathematics graduates distinctive in the graduate market.

Genuinely worthwhile
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if y…

A great decision
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the…
