About this course

University mathematics is a discipline that develops one of the most powerful modes of reasoning available to the human mind: the ability to work with precise definitions, to construct rigorous proofs, to identify patterns and structures, and to apply abstract ideas to concrete problems. It encompasses pure mathematics, where the focus is on the intrinsic logic and beauty of mathematical structures, and applied mathematics, where the tools of analysis, algebra and computation are brought to bear on problems in science, engineering, finance and beyond. The two traditions are deeply intertwined, and studying both gives you an unusually rich and flexible intellectual toolkit.

At the University of York, this four-year full-time degree, which includes a year abroad, develops your mathematical knowledge and technique across a broad range of areas from the foundational to the advanced. You will study pure mathematical topics including analysis, algebra, topology and number theory alongside applied areas such as differential equations, probability, statistics and mathematical methods for physics and engineering. A sandwich year placement and a work placement are built into the programme, giving you substantial professional experience in a mathematics-related role and helping you to see how mathematical knowledge is applied in practice.

The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study at another leading university and to develop your independence and international perspective.

Problem-solving is at the heart of mathematical education. You will develop the ability to engage with difficult problems persistently, to construct rigorous arguments from clear premises, and to communicate mathematical ideas precisely in writing and in discussion.

Graduates from mathematics degrees at York move into finance, data science, software engineering, actuarial work, operations research, teaching, engineering, weather forecasting, research and academia. The analytical discipline of mathematics training is one of the most transferable in higher education.

Highly recommend
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the cit…

Genuinely worthwhile
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the cit…
