About this course

Mathematics and computing are disciplines that have always been deeply connected: computers were invented by mathematicians, and the most important advances in computing, from cryptography and algorithms to machine learning and computer graphics, rest on mathematical foundations. Studying them together gives you a degree that is greater than the sum of its parts, combining the abstract power of mathematics with the practical creativity of computing. This four-year full-time programme at the University of Essex allows you to develop both, building the conceptual depth of a mathematics degree alongside the technical skills of a computing education.

You will study pure mathematics, including analysis, algebra, and discrete mathematics, alongside applied topics such as numerical methods, optimisation, and mathematical modelling. The computing strand covers algorithms, data structures, programming, software engineering, and computer systems. You will work in both mathematical and programming contexts throughout the degree, developing the ability to move between formal proof and working code, between theoretical analysis and practical implementation.

Essex's four-year structure gives you additional time to go deep in both areas, and the department's research strengths in areas such as optimisation, machine learning, and theoretical computer science enrich the curriculum.

Graduates from this programme are well placed for roles in software engineering, data science, scientific computing, mathematical modelling, cryptography, finance, and technology research.
