About this course

Mathematics and data science together address some of the most important intellectual challenges of our time. Mathematics provides the theoretical foundations: the logic, the structures, and the rigorous methods of proof and analysis that underpin everything from statistics to machine learning. Data science applies those foundations to the practical challenge of extracting meaning from large and complex collections of information, using computational tools and statistical methods to identify patterns, test hypotheses, and support decision-making.

The combination equips you to work both at the level of ideas and at the level of real data.

At Nottingham Trent University, this four-year programme includes a foundation year designed to provide a supported entry into degree-level study in a mathematically demanding subject. The foundation year builds the quantitative reasoning, algebraic thinking, and computational skills that you will need before progressing to the main programme. From the main degree onwards, you will study mathematics in depth across areas including calculus, statistics, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics, alongside the data science tools and techniques that translate mathematical understanding into practical capability.

You will work with programming languages and data analysis platforms, develop skills in statistical modelling and machine learning, and learn to present and communicate analytical findings clearly.

This full-time programme is well suited to students who have a strong interest in mathematics and want to connect that interest to the applied world of data and computation. Graduates from programmes of this kind are in high demand across a wide range of sectors, including finance and insurance, technology, healthcare, public policy, marketing analytics, and environmental science. Roles in data analysis, statistical modelling, financial risk, and software development are all natural destinations.

Many graduates also go on to further study in statistics, data science, or applied mathematics at postgraduate level.
