About this course

Mathematics and geography is an unusual combination that connects two disciplines through a shared concern with pattern, structure and the analysis of complex systems. Mathematics develops the capacity for precise abstract reasoning, the ability to work with formal structures, and the quantitative tools for analysing spatial, temporal and probabilistic phenomena. Geography examines the relationship between human societies and the physical environment, and in doing so generates some of the most interesting quantitative and modelling challenges in science: spatial analysis, climate modelling, population dynamics, resource flows and the mapping of complex socio-environmental systems all require sophisticated mathematical treatment.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time degree develops your mathematical skills across analysis, algebra, applied mathematics and statistics alongside geographical knowledge that spans physical geography, human geography and environmental studies. You will learn to understand complex patterns and structures in both mathematical and geographical contexts, and to apply analytical tools to questions that are simultaneously mathematical and spatial. A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to study in another leading academic environment and to develop your understanding of how mathematical and geographical methods are applied in different contexts.

The combination develops rigorous quantitative and analytical skills alongside the fieldwork, research methods and spatial understanding that geographical education provides. You will be able to bring mathematical precision to geographical questions and geographical context to mathematical problems in a way that is genuinely distinctive.

Graduates from mathematics with geography programmes move into data science, GIS and spatial analysis, environmental modelling, research, teaching, urban and regional planning, environmental management, and a wide range of quantitative analytical roles. Postgraduate study in mathematics, statistics, geography, or environmental science is a natural pathway.
