About this course

Mathematics is the language in which the laws of nature, the behaviour of financial markets, and the logic of computing are all expressed. Studying it to degree level develops a precision of thought and a capacity for abstract reasoning that is genuinely rare and widely prized. Pure mathematics trains you to construct rigorous proofs and to explore structures that have no immediate application but turn out to underpin vast areas of science and technology.

Applied mathematics and statistics bring those tools to bear on real-world problems in physics, engineering, biology, economics, and beyond.

This four-year, full-time programme begins with an integrated foundation year designed to consolidate your mathematical knowledge and build the confidence and skills needed for degree-level study. The programme includes a placement year, giving you the opportunity to apply your mathematics in a professional setting and to gain experience that many employers value highly. You will also have the option of a year abroad, broadening your academic experience and giving you the chance to study in a different mathematical culture and environment.

Across the degree you will encounter analysis, algebra, probability, statistics, differential equations, and numerical methods, with increasing opportunity to specialise in areas that interest you most.

Mathematics graduates are among the most employable of any discipline, and the breadth of the programme, combined with the practical experience of a placement year and the international perspective of a year abroad, strengthens that position considerably. Common career paths include data science, financial analysis, actuarial work, software engineering, operational research, and scientific research.
