About this course

Mathematics with statistics is a combination that brings together the abstract power of pure and applied mathematics with the practical discipline of statistical reasoning and data analysis. Mathematics develops your capacity to think rigorously, construct proofs, model complex systems and apply formal methods to problems across science, engineering and the social world. Statistics provides the tools to collect, analyse and interpret data, to quantify uncertainty and to draw valid inferences from evidence.

Together, they produce a graduate who can think analytically, handle quantitative information with confidence and apply mathematical and statistical methods to real-world problems.

At Heriot-Watt University, this four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year in professional placement, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you both international experience and direct industry contact as part of your degree. You will study modern, pure and applied mathematics alongside a strong foundation in contemporary statistics, engaging with both disciplines throughout the programme. This combination develops a dynamic blend of problem-solving and data interpretation skills that is applicable across finance, technology, research, healthcare and many other sectors.

The placement year gives you practical experience of how mathematics and statistics are used in professional contexts, which is invaluable in building career readiness.

With a typical entry tariff of 168 UCAS points, this is a demanding programme. Mathematics with statistics graduates are among the most sought-after in the graduate labour market, finding roles in actuarial science, finance, data science, operations research, software development, statistics, risk management, research and education. The quantitative rigour of the degree is valued by employers across almost every knowledge-intensive industry, and many graduates go on to postgraduate study in statistics, data science, mathematics or finance.

The combination of mathematical depth and statistical competence opens a particularly wide range of career and research pathways.

I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the c…

This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant s…
