About this course

Mathematics is the discipline of rigorous reasoning about abstract structures: numbers, shapes, functions, spaces and the relationships between them. It asks questions that are at once purely intellectual and astonishingly useful, from the behaviour of prime numbers to the equations that describe the physical universe. Studying mathematics at degree level means entering a tradition of thought that values exactness above all and rewards the willingness to follow a chain of reasoning wherever it leads, even into territory that initially seems remote from any practical application.

At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time degree follows the Scottish Honours structure, giving you a broad initial period before moving into the more specialised study of your Honours years, where you can choose from a wide variety of courses to shape a programme that reflects your interests. You might explore pure mathematics in areas such as algebra, analysis and topology, or focus on applied fields including differential equations, fluid mechanics and mathematical physics, or develop expertise in statistics and probability. Glasgow also runs an ambassador scheme that gives students the opportunity to spend time in schools, which develops communication and teaching skills while giving you a taste of mathematics education as a career.
