About this course

Mathematics and statistics together cover two of the most powerful intellectual traditions human beings have developed: the abstract reasoning that produces pure mathematical truths, and the probabilistic and inferential methods that allow us to draw conclusions from data about the uncertain world. The two disciplines reinforce each other, and studying them in combination gives you both the theoretical depth that distinguishes a mathematics degree and the applied statistical literacy that is in growing demand across science, business, policy, and technology.

At the University of Glasgow this four-year, full-time programme allows you to choose from a wide variety of courses in the Honours years, enabling you to shape your degree around the areas of mathematics and statistics that interest you most. You will build from foundational material in calculus, algebra, and probability through to advanced topics in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistical theory and methods. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner university overseas and to experience different mathematical traditions and teaching approaches.

The programme also includes an ambassador scheme that gives students the chance to spend time in schools, developing teaching and communication skills alongside their academic formation.

Graduates of mathematics and statistics are among the most versatile of any degree. Many move into careers in finance, banking, insurance, and actuarial work, where mathematical and statistical skills are directly applied. Others work in data science, technology, engineering, operational research, and the pharmaceutical industry.

Government statistical services, academic research, and teaching are also common destinations. The ambassador scheme and the teaching dimension of the programme make it particularly well suited to those who are considering a career in secondary mathematics education. Further study at Masters or doctoral level is a natural path for those drawn to academic research or specialist professional roles.
