About this course

Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest and most versatile engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, analysis, manufacture, and operation of mechanical systems across every sector of the modern economy. From energy generation and automotive engineering to aerospace, robotics, medical devices, and consumer products, mechanical engineers apply principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, and applied mathematics to create and improve the systems that make the world work.

At Edge Hill University, this three-year, full-time programme gives you a grounding in the core disciplines of mechanical engineering alongside programming and applied mathematics, developing both the theoretical understanding and the technical skills that industry requires. You will encounter the technologies underpinning mechanical systems, theories of engineering design, and instrumentation and measurement techniques, building the competence to analyse real engineering problems and develop solutions. A sandwich year is built into the programme, allowing you to spend a full year working in an engineering environment before completing your degree.

A year abroad option and work placement opportunities are also available, broadening your professional experience and exposing you to engineering practice in different contexts.

Mechanical engineering graduates are in strong demand across a wide range of sectors, including manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, energy, defence, and infrastructure. Roles in design, product development, process engineering, project management, and technical consultancy are all common destinations. Many graduates pursue professional registration with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, working towards incorporated or chartered engineer status.

Postgraduate study in mechanical engineering or a specialist area such as robotics, thermofluids, or manufacturing engineering is another route for those who wish to develop their technical expertise further.
