Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is the broadest and most fundamental of the engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, analysis, and realisation of physical systems that do useful work. From power generation and thermal management to structural design, fluid dynamics, and manufacturing, mechanical engineering underpins the physical infrastructure of modern life. Its practitioners need both mathematical rigour and the practical intuition that comes from working with real materials, real machines, and real constraints.

At the University of Sheffield, this four-year full-time degree covers the fundamental principles of the discipline while giving you the flexibility to develop your own areas of interest as you progress. You will study thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, structural analysis, dynamics, materials science, and design methodology, building both theoretical understanding and practical capability. The programme includes a placement or sandwich year in industry, giving you substantive professional experience, and a year abroad is also available, adding an international dimension to your studies.

Laboratory work and design projects run throughout the programme, ensuring that abstract principles are consistently grounded in physical understanding and practical application.

Graduates from mechanical engineering degrees work across aerospace, automotive, energy, manufacturing, consultancy, defence, and built environment sectors, among many others. Roles include design engineer, manufacturing engineer, stress analyst, project engineer, and systems engineer. The degree provides the academic underpinning for Chartered Engineer status with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study or move into management roles as their careers develop.
