Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest and most diverse engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, analysis, manufacture, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It underpins almost every industry: from energy and transport to healthcare and consumer products, mechanical engineers design the systems and devices that make modern life possible. The discipline draws on mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, and manufacturing, and increasingly on computational modelling, sustainability principles, and the design of complex systems operating in challenging environments.

At Queen's University Belfast, this four-year full-time Undergraduate Masters programme develops the depth of technical knowledge and the breadth of professional skill that a masters-level engineering qualification demands. You will study the core foundations of mechanical engineering, including solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, materials, dynamics, and manufacturing processes, and progress to advanced topics as the programme develops. Mechanical engineers are at the forefront of developing sustainable solutions for the twenty-first century, from eco-friendly materials and renewable energy devices to more efficient transport systems, and the programme reflects this contemporary focus.

You will develop technical skills in design, analysis, simulation, and experiment alongside the professional capabilities in communication, teamwork, and project management that engineering employers require. The masters-level qualification provides a strong foundation for chartered engineer status through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Graduates from mechanical engineering programmes work across aerospace, automotive, energy, manufacturing, defence, medical devices, robotics, and consultancy. The MEng qualification opens doors to leadership and research roles that are less accessible to holders of BEng degrees. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate research or further professional development leading to chartered status.
