About this course

Mechanical engineering brings together mathematics, physics, and creative problem-solving to design, analyse, and improve physical systems that range from micro-scale mechanisms in medical devices to large structures in civil and offshore engineering. It is one of the most versatile engineering disciplines, and mechanical engineers are found across every sector of the economy. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time degree develops both the fundamental principles and the professional capabilities needed for a career in the field, with particular strengths in areas related to the energy industry given Aberdeen's position as the centre of the UK oil and gas sector.

You will develop rigorous understanding across the core areas of mechanical engineering, including solid mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials, manufacturing processes, and engineering design. Mathematical modelling and computational tools are integrated throughout, reflecting the central role of simulation and digital design in modern engineering practice. Teamwork and project management receive sustained attention, because engineering in practice is almost always collaborative.

A year abroad is built into the programme, offering the opportunity to study at a partner institution overseas and to gain international perspective on how engineering is practised across different regulatory and industrial contexts. The typical entry tariff is 168 UCAS points.

Mechanical engineering graduates from Aberdeen are well placed for careers in the energy industry, offshore engineering, oil and gas, renewables, manufacturing, aerospace, and consulting, among other sectors. Aberdeen's strong industrial connections in the energy sector mean that graduates often have well-established routes into the local and national engineering labour market. The four-year MEng-level programme also provides the academic foundation needed for progression towards Chartered Engineer status with the relevant professional bodies, and many graduates continue to postgraduate study or research in specialist engineering areas.

Genuinely worthwhile
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the city …

Would do it again
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” goo…
