About this course

Mechanical engineering addresses the design, analysis, and manufacture of physical systems that perform useful work, from individual machine components to complex integrated systems. The discipline is broad, drawing on classical mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials science, and computational modelling to address problems that span healthcare, transport, energy, manufacturing, and defence. At Southampton, this three-year degree develops your ability to apply mechanical engineering skills across a striking range of fields, from orthopaedic implants and medical devices to automobile systems and structural components.
