Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is a discipline that applies the principles of physics, mathematics, and materials science to the design, analysis, and manufacture of machines, structures, and thermal systems. It is one of the broadest engineering disciplines, underpinning everything from manufacturing and energy to transport and medical devices. Mechanical engineers need both analytical rigour and practical creativity, combining theoretical understanding with the ability to design solutions that actually work in the physical world.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this programme is studied part-time, allowing you to develop engineering knowledge and skills alongside other commitments, whether that is existing work in a technical role, family responsibilities, or other professional activity. The part-time structure means you take fewer modules per week than a full-time student, progressing through the programme over a longer period. The University of the Highlands and Islands serves a geographically dispersed student body across the north and islands of Scotland, and the programme is designed to be accessible to people in communities where full-time university attendance is not practicable.

You will study engineering fundamentals including mechanics, thermodynamics, materials, and manufacturing processes, developing both analytical and design skills over the course of the programme. The part-time route is well suited to students who are already working in technical roles and wish to gain a degree qualification that formalises and extends their existing knowledge.

Graduates from mechanical engineering programmes work across manufacturing, energy, transport, construction, defence, and process industries, as well as in consultancy and technical management roles. The degree provides a foundation for professional engineering qualification and for further study in engineering or related disciplines.
