About this course

Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest and most fundamental of the engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, manufacture, and operation of machines, systems, and structures that convert energy and movement into useful work. It encompasses thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science, structural analysis, and machine design, and its applications span aerospace, automotive, energy, manufacturing, robotics, and civil infrastructure. As the global economy transitions towards sustainable energy and automated systems, mechanical engineering skills are increasingly central to the solutions that are needed.

At Wrexham University, this three-year full-time Mechanical Engineering degree with a foundation year provides a supported entry into the discipline for students who need additional preparation in mathematics and physics. The foundation year establishes the theoretical and practical grounding needed to progress onto a demanding engineering programme, and first-year study then builds carefully from fundamental principles through engineering mathematics, core engineering skills, mechanical engineering fundamentals, design, materials, and practical competencies. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement, giving you substantial professional experience in engineering environments.

The entry tariff is 88 points.

Mechanical engineering graduates are consistently among the most employable of all engineering graduates. Careers span aerospace, automotive, energy, manufacturing, defence, petrochemicals, medical devices, and consultancy. Roles in design and development, manufacturing engineering, project management, maintenance, and technical sales are all well-established pathways.

Progression towards chartered engineer status through a relevant professional body is a common career goal, and the BEng provides a foundation for that route. Postgraduate study or the addition of an MEng-level qualification is often pursued by graduates who wish to strengthen their position for chartered status.
