About this course

Mechanical engineering and manufacturing together address some of the most fundamental questions in applied science and technology: how do physical systems behave, how can materials be shaped and joined into functional products, and how can production processes be made efficient, reliable, and sustainable? Mechanical engineering provides the theoretical foundations in dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and materials, while manufacturing brings a focus on process design, quality control, and the systems through which engineered products move from concept to reality.

At the University of Southampton, this four-year full-time integrated master's programme allows you to achieve a master's level qualification by studying at undergraduate level and progressing to deeper specialisation in manufacturing within the same degree. You will gain knowledge across all aspects of mechanical engineering before focusing more intensively on manufacturing in the later stages of the programme. The course includes a sandwich year, providing substantial professional experience in an industrial or engineering context before you complete your final year.

Work placement experience is also incorporated into the programme, reinforcing the connection between academic learning and engineering practice.

The integration of manufacturing within a mechanical engineering programme is increasingly relevant as industries across the world reconfigure their supply chains, adopt automation, and seek to reduce the environmental impact of production. Graduates are well positioned for roles in aerospace, automotive, energy, defence, consumer products, and advanced manufacturing more broadly. Career paths include roles in design engineering, process engineering, production management, research and development, and technical consulting.

Chartered engineer status through a relevant professional body is a common aspiration, and the integrated master's qualification provides a strong foundation for that route.
