About this course

Mechanical engineering with automotive specialisation applies the fundamental principles of mechanical engineering, including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science, structural analysis, and design, to the specific challenges of the automotive sector. Those challenges have rarely been more significant: the industry is in the middle of a profound transition driven by electrification, emissions regulations, changing consumer expectations, and the development of autonomous and connected vehicles. Engineers who combine mechanical rigour with deep automotive knowledge are central to navigating that transition.

At Bath you will study this three-year full-time degree at an institution with an outstanding reputation in engineering education. The programme covers the foundational mechanical engineering knowledge that underpins all branches of the discipline, developing your ability to analyse structures and mechanisms, understand energy conversion and heat transfer, select and characterise materials, and design and evaluate engineering systems. The automotive component takes that foundational knowledge and applies it to vehicle design, manufacturing processes, and component analysis in the context of the automotive market, including areas of cost, emissions, performance, and the materials choices that engineers must make.

Bath's connections to the automotive and aerospace industries give the programme strong relevance to professional practice.

Graduates are well prepared for careers in the automotive industry, with roles in vehicle design, powertrain engineering, chassis development, manufacturing engineering, motorsport, and the rapidly expanding field of electric vehicle technology. Mechanical engineering skills also transfer across a wide range of other sectors, including aerospace, defence, energy, and consumer products. Many graduates pursue chartered engineer status through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Postgraduate study in automotive engineering, advanced manufacturing, or a related field is a natural route for those who wish to deepen their specialism.
