About this course

Mechatronics and robotics engineering is the discipline that designs intelligent machines: systems that integrate mechanical engineering, electronics, control theory and software to perceive their environment, make decisions and act. From industrial robots and autonomous vehicles to surgical systems and smart infrastructure, mechatronic and robotic technologies are reshaping manufacturing, healthcare, transport and almost every other sector of the economy. Engineers who can work across the mechanical, electrical and computational dimensions of these systems are among the most sought-after technical professionals globally.

At the University of Leeds, this four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year, a work placement and a year abroad, giving you both the depth of technical training and the professional experience to enter this fast-moving field with confidence. The sandwich and placement elements allow you to work in engineering, robotics or manufacturing roles before you complete your degree, and the year abroad provides exposure to different engineering cultures and research environments. Leeds has strong connections with engineering employers across sectors including aerospace, automotive, healthcare and manufacturing.

You will study mechanical design, materials, dynamics, electronics, sensors and actuators, control systems, embedded programming, machine vision, autonomous systems and the mathematical frameworks that underpin all of these. You will develop skills in simulation, prototyping and experimental testing alongside the professional competences of engineering practice, including teamwork, project management and communication.

Graduates go into careers in robotics engineering, automation and control, autonomous systems, mechatronics design, aerospace, automotive, healthcare technology, defence and advanced manufacturing. The interdisciplinary foundation makes graduates versatile across sectors.
