About this course

Media production is the practical discipline of making content for film, television, digital platforms, radio, podcasting and social media, combining creative vision with the technical skills and professional processes needed to bring that vision to screen, speaker or stream. It is a field that has been dramatically transformed by digital technology and the proliferation of platforms, creating new possibilities for independent production alongside the established routes through broadcasters and studios. Understanding how to develop, produce, promote and distribute media content is increasingly valuable not just in the media industries but across the economy.

At the University of Sussex, this three-year full-time programme is based in Brighton, the UK's hub for digital media, and includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you an unusually comprehensive combination of preparatory and professional experience. You will train on the latest industry-standard creative technology and open-access tools for professional social media production, alongside the broader skills of film making, audio production, journalism and content strategy. The programme asks you to develop, execute, promote and distribute an ambitious creative media project of your own design, building the independent production capability that digital media now makes possible alongside the collaborative professional skills that the industry has always demanded.

Graduates of media production programmes find careers in television and film production, digital content creation, social media management, documentary making, journalism, radio and podcast production, commercial video production, arts and cultural organisations and media education. The combination of creative, technical and strategic skills is valued by employers across the full range of media and communications contexts. Further study in film, media, journalism or creative practice is an option for those who want to specialise further or pursue research and academic careers.

Exceeded expectations
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: access to facilities (workshop, equipment, specialist software) is genuinely first-rate. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the c…

Would do it again
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On t…
