About this course

Diagnostic radiography is the clinical discipline responsible for producing and interpreting medical images. Radiographers are the healthcare professionals who operate X-ray, CT, MRI, and ultrasound equipment, apply the principles of radiation physics and image quality to obtain diagnostic information, and work with radiologists and clinical teams to contribute to patient diagnosis and treatment planning. The role requires a combination of technical knowledge, clinical skill, and patient-centred communication, and it demands the ability to work calmly and competently in clinical environments where patients may be anxious or in pain.

At Exeter this three-year full-time programme qualifies you to practise as a diagnostic radiographer. You will study the physics of ionising and non-ionising radiation, cross-sectional anatomy, pathology, image interpretation, and patient care, developing the theoretical foundations that underpin safe and effective radiographic practice. The curriculum integrates scientific knowledge with clinical skills and professional development, ensuring that you graduate not only with the knowledge required for registration but with the professional confidence and ethical grounding to begin clinical practice.

The programme is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council and the College of Radiographers, which are the relevant regulatory and professional bodies.

Clinical placements are central to the degree, taking you into real imaging departments where you will develop your skills under the supervision of qualified radiographers across a range of modalities and patient groups.

Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council on completion opens the route to employment as a diagnostic radiographer in the NHS or independent sector. Experienced radiographers can develop specialisms in areas such as MRI, CT, mammography, or interventional procedures, and can progress to advanced and consultant practitioner roles. Postgraduate study and continuing professional development are expected throughout a radiographer's career.
