Medical Pharmacology Science Route

Medical pharmacology is the science of how drugs interact with the body, encompassing the mechanisms by which medicines act on biological systems, how they are absorbed, distributed, metabolised and eliminated, and how their effects can be predicted, optimised and controlled. It is a discipline that sits between biochemistry, physiology and clinical medicine, and one that is central to the development of new treatments and the safe and effective use of existing ones. Understanding how drugs work is fundamental to almost every aspect of modern healthcare.

At Cardiff University, this three-year full-time programme is offered through the science route, giving it a strong grounding in the biological sciences that underpin pharmacological investigation. You will study cell and molecular biology, physiology, biochemistry and the core principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, developing a rigorous scientific understanding of drug action alongside laboratory skills in biochemical and cell-based experimental techniques. The programme engages with both the scientific foundations of the discipline and its clinical applications, preparing you to think analytically about how pharmacological knowledge is generated and applied.

Graduates from medical pharmacology programmes are well placed for careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, in academic and clinical research, in drug regulatory agencies and in healthcare science roles within the NHS. Research positions, clinical trials work, drug discovery, regulatory affairs and scientific writing are all pathways that build on this training. Many graduates also proceed to postgraduate study, taking masters or doctoral programmes in pharmacology, biochemistry, toxicology, neuroscience or drug development, often with a view to research careers in academia or industry.
