About this course

Medical sciences is the study of the biological, biochemical, and physiological mechanisms that underpin human health and disease. Rather than training clinicians directly, it prepares graduates to understand disease processes deeply, to engage with biomedical research, and to contribute to the scientific and clinical communities that advance medicine. It is a rigorous scientific degree, rooted in molecular biology, genetics, physiology, pharmacology, and pathology, and it demands a high level of scientific literacy and analytical ability.

The University of Edinburgh's four-year full-time Medical Sciences programme draws on one of Europe's most distinguished medical and biomedical research environments. You will study the structure and function of the human body from molecular and cellular levels through to organ systems and whole-body physiology, developing a detailed understanding of how these systems work in health and how they fail in disease. The curriculum covers genetics and genomics, immunology, neuroscience, cardiovascular and respiratory biology, infection and immunity, and the mechanisms of drug action, among other areas.

Edinburgh's research culture means you will be taught by active scientists working at the forefront of biomedical discovery, and the programme offers increasing opportunity to engage with research, including laboratory and project work, as you advance. You will develop skills in scientific reasoning, experimental design, data analysis, and scientific writing, all of which are central to careers in biomedical research and the wider life sciences sector.

Graduates pursue careers in biomedical research, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, clinical research management, science communication, regulatory affairs, and healthcare consultancy. Many also proceed to postgraduate study including PhDs in biomedical science, medicine (via graduate entry), public health, or clinical science programmes.
