About this course

Medical sciences is a broad discipline that sits at the boundary of biology, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and pathology. It is concerned with understanding how the human body works, what happens when things go wrong, and the scientific principles that underlie medical diagnosis and treatment. Students learn to think analytically about systems and processes, moving from the molecular and cellular level up to whole-organ function and the interactions between body systems.

This makes medical sciences both a rigorous scientific training and a direct preparation for a range of health-related careers and further study.

At Plymouth this programme includes a foundation year, which provides a preparatory stage before you enter the full degree. The foundation gives you the scientific grounding needed for advanced study, whether you are coming with a non-standard background or simply want to build your confidence in core areas before tackling degree-level work. Across the degree you will explore cell and tissue biology, genetics and embryology, human development, and the anatomy and physiology of the major human organ systems, building a systematic understanding of the body from its most fundamental structures to its integrated functions.

The programme also includes a sandwich placement year, during which you gain hands-on experience in a professional or research environment. This applied exposure is invaluable for understanding how scientific knowledge translates into practice and for building the professional networks and skills that employers value. A year abroad is also available, offering the opportunity to study medical sciences in an international context, broadening both your academic perspective and your cultural understanding.

Graduates are well positioned for careers in clinical laboratory science, biomedical research, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, healthcare management, public health, and science communication. Many also go on to postgraduate study in medicine, dentistry, or a health profession, using the medical sciences degree as a foundation for entry into graduate-entry clinical programmes.
