About this course

Medicinal chemistry is the science of designing and developing chemical compounds for use as medicines. It sits at the intersection of organic chemistry, biochemistry and pharmacology, requiring an understanding of how molecules interact with biological targets in the body, how drugs are synthesised and how their properties can be optimised to achieve the desired therapeutic effect with minimal unwanted effects. It is a discipline of enormous practical importance: every new medicine that reaches patients has passed through a medicinal chemistry process, and the field continues to generate new treatments for conditions ranging from cancer and infectious diseases to neurological disorders.

At Cardiff University, this three-year full-time programme provides a thorough grounding in organic chemistry alongside specialist content in drug design, structure-activity relationships, pharmacokinetics and the principles of drug discovery. You will develop strong laboratory skills in organic synthesis and analytical chemistry, as well as the theoretical understanding to reason about how molecular structure influences biological activity. Cardiff's position as a research-active chemistry department provides a stimulating academic context, and you will engage with current topics in medicinal chemistry alongside the foundational material.

Graduates from medicinal chemistry programmes are well placed for careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, particularly in drug discovery, medicinal chemistry research, analytical development and regulatory affairs. Contract research organisations, academic research groups, healthcare science and analytical testing also provide career routes. Many graduates proceed to postgraduate study, taking doctoral programmes in medicinal chemistry, organic chemistry, chemical biology or pharmacology, with a view to careers in pharmaceutical research or academia.

The strong synthetic chemistry foundation provided by the degree is valued across any sector that requires high-level practical chemical expertise.

Would do it again
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” good transport …
