About this course

Medicine is one of the most demanding and fulfilling paths a person can take. It requires sustained intellectual effort, genuine compassion, practical skill, and the resilience to work effectively under pressure when the stakes for patients are at their highest. The MBChB at Leeds is designed to prepare you for this challenge fully, combining a rigorous foundation in biomedical science with extensive clinical training and a commitment to developing the humanistic qualities that excellent doctoring requires.

The five-year programme integrates scientific and clinical learning from an early stage, so that you are developing your understanding of physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, and pathology alongside the communication skills, clinical reasoning, and professional values that medical practice demands. You will learn from patients in real healthcare settings throughout the course, with clinical placements in hospitals, general practices, and community settings in and around Leeds giving you exposure to the full breadth of medical care. The programme pays particular attention to the social determinants of health, to ethics, and to the importance of working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

Completion of the MBChB allows you to register with the General Medical Council and to begin the foundation programme, the first stage of postgraduate medical training. From there, doctors go on to specialise in any of the many branches of medicine, from general practice, emergency medicine, and surgery to paediatrics, psychiatry, oncology, and academic medicine. Medicine is a career of continuous learning, and Leeds graduates are well prepared for that commitment, having trained in an environment that takes both scientific excellence and patient-centred care seriously.
