About this course

Medicine is among the most demanding and rewarding of graduate careers, requiring a combination of scientific rigour, clinical judgement, communication skill, and sustained commitment to patient welfare. The undergraduate medicine degree builds all of these over five years, moving from the foundational sciences of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology through to clinical practice, where the knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom are tested and refined in real healthcare environments.

The five-year programme at City St George's, University of London, is clinically focused and patient-centred from an early stage. You will be equipped with the essential knowledge, understanding, skills, and professional attitudes needed to practise medicine competently and ethically after graduation. The programme combines a rigorous scientific foundation with early and sustained clinical exposure, giving you experience in hospitals, GP surgeries, and community settings throughout the course.

You will develop your history-taking, examination, diagnostic reasoning, and communication skills progressively, supported by simulation, small-group teaching, and mentorship from practising clinicians. The programme is studied full-time.

Graduation leads to foundation training in the NHS, the first step on the pathway to full registration and eventual specialisation. Doctors work across every area of medicine, including surgery, general practice, psychiatry, paediatrics, oncology, emergency medicine, and public health, as well as in research, medical education, and global health. The degree is a gateway to one of the most varied and socially significant careers available to graduates anywhere in the world.
