Medicine with a Gateway Year
Medicine is the study and practice of diagnosing, treating and preventing disease and injury, and it is one of the most demanding and rewarding of all professional pathways. A gateway year programme is designed for students whose prior academic qualifications do not yet meet the standard entry requirements for direct entry to the main medical programme, providing a structured bridging year that builds the scientific knowledge, academic skills and clinical awareness needed to succeed.
At Hull York Medical School, a partnership between the Universities of Hull and York, you will follow a six-year programme that begins with the gateway year before progressing into the full undergraduate medicine curriculum. The programme is designed to equip the doctors of tomorrow with the clinical skills, scientific understanding, and professional values needed to deliver exceptional healthcare. You will study the biological, biochemical and physiological sciences that underpin medicine, develop clinical and communication skills through early patient contact, and engage with the ethical and social dimensions of medical practice.
The programme combines problem-based and enquiry-based learning with clinical placements in NHS settings across the Hull and York region.
Medical graduates register with the General Medical Council and undertake two foundation training years before choosing a specialty training pathway. The range of specialties is extraordinarily wide, from general practice to surgery, paediatrics, psychiatry, cardiology, oncology, anaesthetics, public health and many others. The profession offers sustained intellectual challenge, clinical responsibility, and the opportunity to work in some of the most meaningful contexts in human experience.
Many doctors also combine clinical practice with research, education or medical leadership. Medicine remains one of the most respected and consistently in-demand of all professions, with opportunities to work across the UK, internationally, and in global health.
