About this course

Mental health nursing is a vocation that demands both scientific knowledge and deep human sensitivity. Mental health nurses work with people experiencing conditions including depression, anxiety, psychosis, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and addiction, providing care that is simultaneously clinical, relational, and ethical. The work takes place across a wide range of settings, from acute inpatient wards and crisis resolution teams to community mental health services, forensic units, and services for children and young people, and the nurse's ability to form a therapeutic relationship with patients is as central as any technical skill.

At City St George's, University of London, this three-year full-time programme leads to professional registration as a mental health nurse, combining theoretical study with simulated practice and substantial clinical experience. The programme benefits from London's exceptional diversity of NHS trusts and healthcare settings, giving you access to placement opportunities that span different mental health populations, acuity levels, and care models. High-tech simulation facilities allow you to practise complex clinical skills in a safe environment before you encounter them in real clinical settings.

You will study mental health legislation, pharmacology relevant to psychiatric practice, risk assessment, therapeutic communication, and the evidence base for psychological and social interventions.

City St George's nursing programmes have strong employment outcomes, and the London location means graduates are well placed to enter one of the largest and most varied healthcare labour markets in the world.

Registered mental health nurses are in consistent and significant demand across the NHS and independent sector. Graduates work in inpatient, community, and specialist settings, and many go on to specialise in areas such as forensic mental health, eating disorder services, substance misuse, or CAMHS. Senior clinical roles, advanced nurse practitioner training, and management careers are also accessible as experience accumulates.
