Mental Health Nursing

Mental health nursing is a registered health profession dedicated to supporting people who experience mental distress, mental illness, and the complex challenges that can arise when psychological and emotional wellbeing are severely affected. Mental health nurses work in partnership with individuals, their families, and carers, building sustained therapeutic relationships that support recovery, promote wellbeing, and help people to exercise greater control over their own lives. The work requires clinical knowledge, empathic communication, professional resilience, and the ability to navigate complex ethical and legal situations.

At the University of Roehampton, this three-year full-time programme equips you with the knowledge, skills, and professional confidence to make a real difference to people experiencing mental health difficulties. The programme is structured around a combination of academic study and extensive clinical placement, developing your understanding of mental health conditions and their evidence base alongside the practical therapeutic and clinical skills that safe nursing requires. You will study psychopharmacology, mental health law, therapeutic communication, and the social and cultural determinants of mental health, as well as the range of conditions, from anxiety and depression through to psychosis, personality disorders, and dementia, that mental health nurses encounter across different settings.

Roehampton's location in south-west London gives the programme access to a wide range of NHS and independent mental health services for clinical placement, and the university's commitment to inclusive education reflects well on a programme preparing graduates for work with some of the most vulnerable members of society.

Graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and work across NHS mental health trusts, community teams, crisis services, forensic units, and an increasing range of specialist settings. The profession offers strong employment prospects, and many mental health nurses go on to advanced practice, specialist roles, or postgraduate study in clinical psychology or mental health leadership.
