About this course

Microbiology and immunology together explore two of the most fundamental dimensions of biological science: the extraordinary diversity of microorganisms and the sophisticated systems that multicellular organisms have evolved to defend themselves against microbial threats. Microbiology encompasses the study of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa, examining their biology, genetics and ecology as well as their roles in disease, biotechnology and environmental processes. Immunology examines the molecular and cellular mechanisms through which the immune system recognises and responds to pathogens, and how those mechanisms can go wrong in disease or be harnessed for therapeutic benefit.

At the University of Keele, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year in professional placement, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial practical and international experience alongside your academic study. You will gain core grounding in biology, biochemistry and the physiology of microorganisms and viruses, before developing advanced laboratory skills and analytical techniques that are essential for work in research and applied settings. The programme is designed to develop your capacity for analytical thinking, experimental design, data interpretation and scientific communication, preparing you for careers and further study in an area of science that has rarely been more important.

Graduates from microbiology and immunology programmes pursue careers in medical research, vaccine development, clinical laboratory science, biotechnology, the pharmaceutical industry, public health, food safety and environmental science.
