About this course

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, the bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and archaea that inhabit virtually every environment on Earth. Despite their invisibility to the naked eye, these organisms are central to almost every major process in the biosphere, from nutrient cycling and decomposition to disease, fermentation, and the production of antibiotics and vaccines. Microbiology underpins medicine, agriculture, food production, environmental science, and biotechnology, and advances in the field have driven some of the most significant developments in modern science.

At the University of Surrey, this four-year, full-time degree includes a foundation year that provides an initial year of study for students who need to build their scientific background before entering the main microbiology programme. The foundation year is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to succeed at degree level, and Surrey's approach to education integrates digital skills and preparation for the evolving technological landscape of the workplace. Through the main degree, you will study bacterial and viral biology, microbial genetics, immunology, infection and disease, and the application of microbiological techniques in research and industry.

Laboratory work is central to the programme, and you will develop practical skills alongside your theoretical understanding. The typical entry tariff of 120 points reflects the foundation year entry requirements.

Microbiology graduates work in a broad range of sectors. The pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries employ microbiologists in drug discovery, production, and quality control. Public health microbiology, clinical laboratory science, and food safety testing are important application areas in the public and commercial sectors.

Environmental microbiology is a growing field with applications in bioremediation and sustainability. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in microbiology, infectious disease, immunology, or related biological sciences, developing the specialist expertise needed for research and senior professional roles.

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student city wi…
